Student Visa

Student Visa

The Student Visa (Subclass 500) allows international students to enter or remain in Australia to study a full-time registered course at an approved educational institution. This visa is the foundation for your academic journey and comes with specific conditions you must adhere to, including maintaining adequate academic performance, attendance, and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). This visa application requires strong evidence of financial capacity and must satisfy the Genuine Student (GS) requirement, proving your sincere intention to stay temporarily in Australia to study.

Full-Time Study
You must be enrolled in a registered full-time course of study (CRICOS registered).
Work Rights
The visa permits you to work a limited number of hours (typically 48 hours per fortnight) during study sessions and full-time during scheduled course breaks, allowing you to gain experience and manage living costs.
Mandatory OSHC
Applicants must maintain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of their stay.
Genuine Student (GS) Criterion
You must satisfy the Department of Home Affairs that you genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily for the purpose of study. This requires a compelling, well-supported statement and evidence.
What is the Genuine Student (GS) requirement?
The GS requirement assesses whether your intention to stay in Australia is genuinely for study purposes. It requires a detailed, evidence-backed statement on your educational history, future career goals, and why you chose your specific course and Australia.
Do I need to maintain health insurance?
Yes. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is mandatory for the entire duration of your visa, including any family members accompanying you. We help you arrange compliant OSHC.
What happens if I want to change my course?
You must notify your education provider and secure a new Confirmation of Enrolment (COE). Changing to a lower qualification level (e.g., from a Master’s to a Diploma) can risk your visa compliance and requires expert advice.
How much money do I need to show?
The Department of Home Affairs sets a minimum fund requirement (reviewed annually) to cover tuition, travel, and living costs for you and any included family members for the first 12 months. This must be presented in an acceptable format.
